The missionary adventures of the Stimpson family

About the Blog

We’re the Stimpsons, and this is our blog.

About a year ago, we felt God directing us to move to Romania as full-time missionaries.

Because that’s a pretty hefty endeavor (especially with four kids in tow), we got a lot of advice and counsel before plunging into it.  One of the first people we talked to was a good friend of ours, Jim.  About a month before he passed away, we called him up and asked him if what we were thinking made any sense or if we were just nuts to consider it.

“Jake,” Jim told us, “Jesus said to go.  It doesn’t matter where.  He just said go, and it’s our responsibility to obey.  When God opens a door for you, you gotta go through it.  There’s no guarantee that door will stay open if you don’t take it.  If God’s telling you to do this, you gotta obey.”

And so that’s what we’re doing.  We’re obeying the mandate of Jesus to take His Gospel  to every nation on the planet, to declare His grace and goodness to the ends of the earth.

We’re a family of six living in innercity Milwaukee doing ministry among college students and young adults, and we’re preparing for the biggest adjustment of our lives.

This blog will be a place to share our journey with you all, to vent when it’s needed, to sort out the conflicting thoughts and ideas, to write about all we’re experiencing, and to maybe inspire other families with a call to missions to just get up and do it.

Jesus said to go.  It doesn’t matter where.  You just gotta go.

Update: we are now a family of six living in Bucharest.  We made the plunge and are full-time missionaries to the nation of Romania.

  3. Hey Jake,

Actually, I’m harassing Ben but I wanted to drop a howdy to ya. Loved the mellow yellow post. You haven’t really “enjoyed” life until you’ve had a 5 gallon bucket with a toilet seat 😉

    Dear idmw,

My name is Joyce and I work for is a free one stop website for people preparing to move or working and living overseas. We provide a myriad of services for expatriates and we have over 2,000 articles to help and support the people moving around the world and we are now creating an interview section to help the expats with real life experiences!
We quite enjoy your blog about living in Romania, it is very interesting and informative. Would it be possible to interview you to further share some of your tips and feature some of your first hand experience as an Expat and your interview will be published on our Expat Interview section as a guide for our expat readers. The questions are mainly about the day to day lifestyle of an expat. If it would be possible, could you also send some photographs that we can use?
Of course, if you accept, we can add a link to your blog or some of your website.
The questions are enclosed, feel free to respond freely. You can return the doc with your answers if you accept this invitation.
Thanks in advance and do let me know if you prefer other means to conduct this interview and we would be happy to accommodate your terms.

    Best regards,

Hi, My wife and I are moving to Cluj this Summer from England as we were called many years ago to join a church plant and then ‘reminded’ by God a year ago. We will be joining Flavius Ianchis who has the backing of ‘New Frontiers’. While we hope Romanian, the church intends to be bi-lingual and reach out to the many expat students studying in Cluj as well as the locals who want to learn English. If you are active around Cluj we would love to meet you.

Hey, Duncan! That’s awesome you’re coming to Romania! Unfortunately, Cluj is a long way from where we are in Bucharest, but it’d be fun to connect sometime. I sent you an email, so let’s stay in contact!
